Although it is extremely difficult
To tame the wild mind,
We must succeed.
– Sri Chinmoy, Seventy-Seven Thousand Service-Trees, part 26, Agni Press, 2002
If we can invoke Peace and then offer it to somebody else, we will see how Peace expands from one to two persons, and gradually to the world at large.
– Sri Chinmoy
Seven Minutes of World Peace was inaugurated in 1984 by Sri Chinmoy: The Peace Meditation at the United Nations. Since its inception, numerous individuals and groups from around the world have participated, and letters and proclamations have been received from Heads of State, governors and mayors. It is a soulful prelude to the United Nations Peace Bell Ceremony, which itself “rings in” the International Day of Peace.
The purpose of Seven Minutes of World Peace is to give individuals the opportunity to join with others around the world in seven minutes of simultaneous prayer, meditation or simply a heartfelt yearning for peace. As Sri Chinmoy once remarked, “Peace will come about in the world from the perfection of individuals…. Collective aspiration has to come about slowly — one person at a time.”
Since its inception, more than 100 groups in over 40 countries have joined the annual observance, and letters and proclamations have been received from Heads of State and mayors of more than 40 cities.
