Although it is extremely difficult
To tame the wild mind,
We must succeed.
– Sri Chinmoy, Seventy-Seven Thousand Service-Trees, part 26, Agni Press, 2002
What is our goal?
Our goal is within us. To reach that goal we have to enter into the spiritual life. In the spiritual life, the thing that is most needed is consciousness. Without this, everything is a barren desert. When we enter into a dark place, we take a flashlight or some other light in order to know where we are going. If we want to know about our unlit life, we have to take the help of consciousness.
Man, in his outer life or his outer achievements, is very limited. But the same man, when he enters into the inmost recesses of his heart, feels that there is something which is constantly trying to expand itself. This is consciousness. This consciousness links him with the highest Absolute.
Consciousness itself is at once Light and power. As Light, it identifies with the pure inspiration and deep aspiration of our inner world. As power, it exercises its divine sovereignty over the darkest bondage and the wildest ignorance of our outer world.
Right now the goal is a far cry, but you must not be discouraged. Step by step, slowly and steadily, you will reach the goal. From kindergarten you go to primary school, then to high school and then to the university. So do not be restless or impatient. Only God knows when His choice hour will strike for you. Let us walk along the path of reality. On the strength of our inner aspiration, the goal itself will come towards us.
When we dedicate ourselves to the Supreme, to the unparalleled goal of realizing God, only then will life reveal itself to us as the message of Truth, the message of infinity, eternity and immortality.
